Scary Mormons have horns; Happy Missionaries have investigators

July 19, 2010

OH man.  I'm tired today.  We stayed at our Ward Mission Leader's house last night and got up at 6:00 this morning to go spotting for deer.  He's scouting out his area so when hunting season comes, he knows where the deer like to chill.  We were climbing all over the hills in his truck for probably 4 hours.  It was pretty fun.  We didn't find any deer though, which was disappointing.  Actually we did find some on the way to the place we were going to look for them, but not at the actual place we looked.  There are several "very big hills" (not mountains, but pretty big) all around Battle Mountain and there are lots of never-traveled dirt roads made by who knows who.  It was pretty rough driving but his truck was able to handle it.  I got some air off of some of the bumps (no I didn't wear my seat belt because it tried to cut me in half on one of the bumps.  I decided to just hold on.  Don't worry, we weren't going fast at all.)  There were some good pic opportunities but I didn't take my camera.  Ah Mu got pics though, so I'll get some from him.

This week seemed really slow, but we actually did ok.  So nothing new with the work.

I read a book about J. Golden Kimball last night.  He's the General Authority back in the day that would swear in General Conference.  He was a cowboy and he said that he swore because the animals wouldn't listen to him and do what he wanted if he didn't.  So as a General Authority he still had a few left-overs of a much more expansive and colorful vocabulary.  Also, Mormons have horns because of him.  He was serving as a mission president in the Southern States mission.  The KKK in Georgia didn't like the missionaries there so they threatened that if they didn't leave, they would tar and feather all of them.  So Elder Kimball took all the missionaries into the hills the night they were going to come after them and camped near a stream and had a testimony meeting.  The KKK showed up on the other side of the stream with tar and feathers waiting for them.  They said, "You Mormons aren't welcome here and we're here to teach you a lesson."  Elder Kimball replied, "Yes, we are Mormons, and Mormons have horns.  If you come across that stream we will gore all of you to death."  The KKK couldn't see if they had horns or not but I guess they believed him so they dumped the tar on the ground and they all left.  The rumors flew after that, claiming that, "By the light of the full moon, Mormons grow horns and get really crazy."  HAHA!  There were a lot of funny stories in there and it was a really cool book.  It only took a couple hours to read.  It was fun.

In a couple weeks I get to go to Reno for leadership training.  I'm excited.  It's 3 days long and Elder Taylor is in Sparks now!  AND he's a District Leader so we get to go together!  Yes!  I'm so excited to see him again.  The only thing that would make it better is if he happens to be in my old area in Sparks.  That would be way too cool.  I would definitely stay with him in my old area.  Oh my goodness, I'm kinda freaking out right now, I'm so excited.

Well, that's all I can think of right now.  I'm jealous of all the family gatherings and such.  Good thing I have new family here (but somehow they don't compare... and I don't like them right now, haha).  But I'm going to go.  Talk to ya'll next week.  I love you!

¡Hola familia!  (Tami, that means, "Hello family!"  I know you don't like Spanish. haha.)

Well this week was slow but Sunday made up for most of it.  We got a lot of promising referrals on Sunday and some other exciting things happened.  One of our eternal investigators (she has been investigating for about 3 years now) came to Church for the first time yesterday.  I was about ready to go into shock when I greeted her at the door.  I felt like I was going to pass out like Ammon in the Book of Mormon when he taught King Lamoni.  I was really happy.  Also, another one of our investigators that hasn't progressed in a long time started reading the Book of Mormon without us even asking her (lately).  So that was really good.  She has some questions about Joseph Smith so we are going to show her that movie that is playing at Temple Square (I got a copy from somewhere).  I love that movie.  It is very good.

We have a baptism next Sunday.  It is for the guy that bailed on us last time.  Hopefully he won't bail again.

This week I get to go to Reno for a leadership training.  It is 3 days long: wed, thurs, and fri.
8 hours a day and then we go and practice some of the principles.  There are quite a few changes coming down from Salt Lake so it'll take a lot of getting used to.  They are introducing a lot of new teaching skills to Preach My Gospel so it's going to be like relearning how to teach.  It will be interesting.

Well, I really can't think of anything else.  I hope everybody has fun in the next couple weeks.  Remember poor old me that gets yelled at by dumb people everyday.  Haha.  Just kidding.
